NEWS FROM PUPPY JAZZ

So much Jazz and so little time. It is difficult to keep up with all the concerts, local appearances and new CDs. Why is Kenny G touted as a Jazz artist? Smooth Jazz? Guess the record companies didn't know where to stick Kenny and his ilk. Enough!

We went to 2 concerts this past month. First we heard the 2nd Annual Tribute to Bob Haggart. Oh my, what a concert! Jon-Erik Kellso got sick and had to stay in his hotel room, so Randy Sandke has to fill two trumpet chairs. He did, admirably. An extra bonus at the concert was the appearance of legendary Svend Asmussen, who being in his early 90s still set the violin on fire. The concert was great and those that didn't go missed a winner.

Second concert was Diane Linscott who with Harry Allen, Charlie Prawdzik, Mark Neuenschwander, Dave Trefethen and Johnny Moore took the roof of the hall! Have never heard a bad Harry Allen. Prawdzik was elegant on the piano and swung. Mark provided a steady rhythmic pulse. Dave, a relatively new transplant from New England played both rhythm guitar and some exquisite soles. Johnny Moore is one of those drummers you feel but don't hear. His rock steady beat and tasty solos were lessons in how drums should be played. Diane's singing is perfect. She sings on pitch, enunciates clearly and understands the lyric. The pacing of marvelous tunes throughout the program was perfect. Be a long time before we forget this concert.

From the DJAZZL label we have two new CDs. This label features the great singer Diane Linscott
This CD is titled "Our DAY at the Movies" and features tunes from a lot of the Doris Day Movies. It features Diane Linscott with the sympathetic accompaniment of Charlie Prawzik on piano. Some of the tunes were made famous by Day and there is some obscure tunes as well. No pianist accompanied Doris as welol as Charlie does here and Diane is in fine form. A keeper. DJAZZL 005.
